Joseph Tsai

Joseph Tsai brings a strong background in law and finance to the Alibaba team. Born in Taiwan and educated in the United States, Joseph joined the company in October 1999 and spearheaded the establishment of Alibaba Group's Hong Kong headquarters. He is currently the chief financial officer of Alibaba Group and a non-executive director of Alibaba.com.
In 2005, Joseph led the negotiations for Alibaba Group's landmark partnership with Yahoo! Inc., in which Alibaba Group acquired Yahoo! China and Yahoo! Inc. invested US$1billion cash in Alibaba Group, in exchange for a 40% stake in the Group.
From 1995 to 1999, Joseph was a vice president at Investor AB, the main investment vehicle of Sweden's Wallenberg family, where he was in charge of Asian venture capital investments. Previously, Joseph worked in a management buyout firm based in New York. He is a qualified lawyer in the State of New York and practiced law from 1990 to 1993 with Sullivan & Cromwell, a New York-based international law firm.
Joseph received his B.A. degree in economics from Yale University and Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.
