Taobao Releases Key Metrics for First Half of 2007


Online Shopping Increasingly Mainstream in China


Hangzhou, China, 18 July 2007 - Taobao.com, China's leading consumer e-commerce website and a division of the Alibaba Group, released key metrics for the first half of 2007. Key developments and trends include:

Transaction volume nearly double 2006 figures

Taobao's transaction volume, or gross merchandise volume (GMV) of the first half of year 2007 rose to over RMB15.7 billion (US$2.06 billion), almost reaching the whole year 2006 GMV figure (RMB 16.9 billion), and almost double the amount for the first half of 2006.

Online shopping growth outpacing overall retail sector
Growth in online shopping is outpacing growth of China's overall consumer shopping sector.

Number of Registered Users Approaches 40 million
Taobao's number of registered users reached 39.9 million by the end of June 2007, an 80% increase from that of the first half year 2006 and accounting for nearly all internet shoppers in China.

Product Listings Approximately 75 million
By mid-2007 there were approximately 75 million online product listings on Taobao per day, a 100 per cent increase from the same period of 2006.

Taobao.com Transaction Volume vs Traditional Retail
According to data published by China's Ministry of Commerce, in the first half of 2007 Taobao's daily average transaction volume equals the equivalent of 122 Carrefour stores or 150 Wal-mart stores in China.

Major Brands Join Taobao Platform
An increasing number of large retailers, official dealers and famous brands are opening specialized shops on Taobao. In the first half year of 2007, 7,827 manufacturers applied to open Taobao shops in "Taobao Mall" a special section of the site dedicated to large retailers and brands. Joining Taobao Mall are world famous brands such as P&G, Apple, Motorola and Logitech International. These global brands join leading local brands such as Lining, which opened a shop on Taobao.com in 2006.
