Large corporate buyers in North America, Europe and Asia are seeking to maximize the efficiency of their procurement efforts and find new sourcing opportunities from low-cost manufacturing bases like China. Leading Canadian retail brand Giant Tiger is no exception.
In May 2006, Giant Tiger set up a buying office in Shanghai, China to facilitate product sourcing and improve quality control for its customers in North America. In the same year, the company started to use Alibaba.com to find high-quality suppliers from China and elsewhere. It has also been working with Alibaba's Buyer Service & Development team to explore value-added sourcing services offline.
A milestone came in January 2008 when Alibaba.com organized a customized sourcing event for Giant Tiger in Shanghai to help it recruit quality suppliers of toys, pet products, fitness equipment and home products. Eleven Chinese suppliers were carefully chosen from around 400 Alibaba.com Gold Supplier members to attend the private sourcing event. The lucky suppliers were given an opportunity to present their product offerings to Giant Tiger face-to-face and exchange ideas with company executives. The results were beyond anyone's expectations – Giant Tiger placed a sizable order with a Shantou-based supplier on the spot. This was the fastest transaction in Alibaba's history!
