Alibaba.com Helps P&G Open Door To China's Vast Supplier Base

Alibaba.com was created with the mission to make it easy to do business anywhere for small and medium-sized businesses, but it is also a reliable sourcing tool for large corporations to diversify their supplier base and find new products. P&G is one of them.

P&G uses Alibaba.com in China to source a myriad of products, from raw materials to packaging, office supplies, factory equipment and molding tools. As a Fortune 500 company housing a strong portfolio of trusted household brands, P&G taps into the strong supplier network of Alibaba.com to support its global R&D and purchasing functions and provide products for consumers in over 180 countries.

The factory video feature available on Alibaba.com is particularly welcomed by P&G China's Connect & Develop Beijing Technical Center for it is helpful in identifying suitable suppliers that meet P&G's advanced technical criteria. "The factory video is really very powerful. It can shorten the time for searching and gives us a short list of suppliers," said Jean Jin, Section Head of the Center.

Separately, an anecdote that occurred in 2007 also proved Alibaba.com an effective sourcing channel to P&G's Guangzhou division: In 2007, P&G's Guangzhou division was in need of a supplier of a specialized mechanical tool, and embarked on a lengthy search involving desk research and factory visits in China. The right manufacturer was identified during the process, but a casual search for the same product on Alibaba.com revealed the same supplier instantly! The first supplier listed in Alibaba's search results was the same manufacturer P&G had spent several months tracking down using traditional channels. A considerable amount of time and human resources could have been saved if Alibaba.com was used in the first place.

The collaboration between P&G and Alibaba.com is not limited to the online level. To exchange ideas and further enhance the customer experience, the two companies have been working together on different offline activities such as buyer training and workshops. P&G has even set up an online store on Alibaba.com's sister website, Taobao.com, to increase its exposure to China's vast online consumer community.
