Vitamin D is an important nutrient necessary not only for maintaining calcium balance and safeguarding skeletal integrity but also essential for overall health and well being.
It is primarily acquired by exposure to sunlight and food articles commonly consumed by Indians do not provide adequate vitamin D.
No food articles are fortified in India.
More than 90% of apparently healthy Indians of the all age group have been found to have low serum Vitamin D Levels.
Nutritional rickets and Vitamin D deficiency continues to exist as a major health problem in India.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VITAMIN D
VITAMIN D TOXICITY
Vitamin D toxicity is rare no data found till date in healthy people with intake levels lower than 10,000IU/day.
There is increased risk of Hypercalcaemia in response to Vitamin D supplementation in diseases like Hyperparathyroidism, Sarcoidosis, Tuberculosis and Lymphoma.
Drugs such as Phenytoin (Dilantin), Phenobarbital (Luminal), Carbamazepine (Tegretol) and Rifampicin increase the metabolism and decrease serum Vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D should not be taken along with Orlistat, Cholestyramine, colestipol and mineral oils as they reduce its absorption.
The oral antifungal medication Ketokanazole also reduces serum levels of active vitamin D by inhibiting hydroxylase enzyme.
One must consult a qualified health care provider regarding any increase in vitamin D taken in case of bone disorders.
