Religious handpainted icon on wood and frescoes on canvas with eggyolk and goldleaves 24k according orthodox traditional rules.
I prepare and paint the icons following the traditional rules of Byzantine Art.At first I have a well dried canvas with glue. After that I prepare a mix which contains bone glue, water and chalk power. This must be laid down with a brush in 6-8 layers. After the surface is complete drying, the wood is polished very fine with emery paper. Then I draw the icon for the gilding. I put 4-5 layers of bolos. When the bolos is drying I start the gilding of gold leaves with a solution containing water and glue. When the gilding surface is ready it polished with a special agate stone. This gilding called burnished – gold and requires time and experience. The gilding surface seems like a jewel. Then I start painting with tempera pigments (egg yolk). The first layer (proplasmos) is made of the darkest colors of the icon.
The other layers go from dark to the light colors until the final lightest colors. After several days, when the colors are very well dried, follows the varnish which protects the icon against dust and water.
