What is Colostrum?

Colostrum is not milk, it is the pre-milk fluid produced from the mother's mammary gland during the first 48 hours after birth. It has higher protein, lower fat ad lower sugar content compared to milk. It provides 10-17 times more iron, 3 times more vitamin D and 10 times more vitamin A, resulting in its optimal nutritional potency compared to milk.

Most of the protein content in colostrum is natural immunoglobulin-G (IgG), an element to produce antibodies. Protein colostrum also contains hormones, enzymes, natural sugar and growth factor to promote growing and healing of body systems. It is rich in proline-rich polypeptide to maintain healthy immune system. Peroxidase and lactoferrin content may help to fight against bacteria and eliminate toxins.

1) Immunoglobulins - Immunoglobulins are the most important components of colostrum. These are special immune cells produced by the body in response to the host being exposed to foreign substances (antigens) such as infectious microbes. The immunoglobulins are directed specifically to the antigen that induced their formation. Bovine colostrum contains all five classes immunoglobulins found in human colostrum which are IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD. The most abundant immunoglobulin is IgG. Human Colostrum contains about 2% igG while bovine colostrum has up to 40 times that amount.
