The SP-150 potentiostat is an economical research-grade potentiostat. With its modular chassis, this instrument can be customize
The SP-150 consists of singlecomputer board associated with one potentiostat channel board. The SP-150 hasits own operating system included into the computer board. When started, theon-board computer performs full control of the experiment. The potentiostat canreceive an additional low current board. One or several computers perform fullremote monitoring of the system. These computers are connected to the SP-150through an Ethernet connection or with an alternative USB connection (only onecomputer). With the Ethernet connection, different users are able to access theinstrument. But the use remains locked when an experiment is running on theunit.
This instrument can be provided witha low current option or coupled with a current amplifier (2, 5,10,20 A). The SP-150 potentiostat can control auxiliary instruments (rotating electrode or thermostatic bath) and record external signals such as absorbance, rotating speed, temperature and quartz microbalance variables (resistance and frequency).
The aim of this manual is to drivethe user in the instrument installation and configuration through severalsections. After an introductive part, the user will discover the abilities ofthe instrument with the different connection modes. The second to fourthsections concern the instrument installation and configuration and theconfiguration of the computer. In the fifth chapter, advanced features areexplained. Then the SP-150's accessories are described. The last sectiondescribes technical specifications.
Whenan user receives a new unit from thefactory, the software and firmware are installed and upgraded. The instrumentis ready to be used. it does not need to be upgraded.
The SP-150 chassis can contain onepotentiostat/galvanostat channel. This channel board can be with or without EIScapability and coupled to a low current option.
It can be set, run, paused orstopped at the users convenience. Most of the settings of the channel can bemodified during a run, without interrupt the experiment.
Simultaneous measurements of thecurrent and potential of the working electrode are performed continuously, using two 16-bit Analog to Digital Converters. This allows the user to maketrue power or noise measurements.
Once the techniques have been loadedand started from the PC, the experiments are entirely under the control of the SP-150 on-boardcomputer. Data are temporarily buffered in the SP-150 and regularly transferred to thePC, which is used for data storage, on-line visualization, on-line and off-linedata processing and fitting.
This architecture ensures very safeoperation since a shut down of the monitoring PC does not affect theexperiments in progress on the SP-150.
The SP-150 potentiostat/galvanostatis controlled either with EC-LabÒ Express or with ECLabÒsoftware. An electrochemical experiment is a set of open circuit sequences andgalvanic sequences, measuring the potential in both cases, and appliedpotential sequences, measuring the current.
Usual electrochemical techniques, such as Cyclic Voltammetry, Chronopotentiometry, etc.., are obtained byassociations of elementary sequences, and appear as flow-diagrams combiningthese sequences.
The user can find more informationabout EC-Labâand EC-LabâExpress software in the software user's manuals.
Conditional tests can be performedat various levels of any sequence either on the working electrode potential orcurrent, or on the counter electrode potential, or on the external parameters. These conditional tests either force the experiment to go to the next step orto loop to a previous sequence or end the sequence.
The application software packageprovides useful protocols for general electrochemistry, corrosion, batteries,super-capacitors and custom applications. Standard graphic functions such asre-scaling, zoom, linear and log scales are available. Standard processed filescan be created at the user's convenience upon running an experiment, forpurpose of real time display of the experiments in progress. Post processing isalso possible using built-in options to create variables at the user'sconvenience, such as derivative or integral values, etc... Raw data andprocessed data can be exported as standard ASCII text files.
This design makes the SP-150 a very versatile single potentiostat. It can support most of the electrochemical applications from corrosion experiments to research on batteries,super-capacitors or electrochromics. It is also a very well adapted tool for sensors and actuators applications.
It is assumed that the user is familiar with Microsoft Windows©and knows how to use the mouse and keyboard to access the drop-down menus.
