Heparin is a sulphated glycosaminoglycans which presents in various mammalian tissues including liver, lung and intestine and is usually obtained from the intestinal mucosa or other suitable tissues of domestic mammals used for food by man. On complete hydrolysis, it liberates D-glucosamine, D-glucuronic acid, L-iduronic acid, acetic acid and sulphuric acid. It has the characteristic property of delaying the clotting of freshly shed blood through its action on antithrombin III which inhibits the activity of thrombin and Factor Xa. Thrombin and Factor Xa influence conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, which is the main clotting process.

Heparin is mainly used in pharmaceutical products for the treatment of thrombosis, phlebitis and embolism. It is also used to prevent coagulation during dialysis and other extracorporeal procedures. Other medical uses included the anticoagulation of blood samples and the flushing of catheters and cannulas to prevent blood clotting.
