Dirt particles are trapped throughout the thickness of the filter, obviously the coarser particles in the outer, more loosely packed regions while finer particles will be held in the denser, more central portion of the tube. Graded-density filters have a higher dirt holding capacity and longer effective filter life than other depth filters with single-density construction.
