With the country's oil production declining, the Indonesian government has urged operators to develop idle fields to take advantage of soaring oil prices.

The preliminary estimates showing the country could come up with an additional 58,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) next year to add to its current total production of 954,000 bpd. The domestic demand for oil is 1.4 million bpd.

There are at least 31 idle fields in Indonesia and the ministry's director general of oil and gas, Luluk Sumiarso, said a new regulation had been put in place earlier this month requiring operators of idle fields to transfer operating rights to parties willing and able to continue to develop the fields.

Betting on that new policy and other efforts, the government expects to be able to achieve production targets of 1.3 million bpd by 2010.

The government was retooling investment policy in an effort to attract new investment to idle fields. Incentive packages are to include better credit arrangements and more favorable production splits.

Therefore, we are given the opportunity to contribute our effort to meet the countrys goal and to broker some of the idle fields to the foreign investors.
