Detailed Product Description
Eames Soft Pad Group
Introduced in 1969
Designers: Charles Eames, 1907-1978, Ray Eames, 1912-1988
Design History/Concept
- Conversations between Charles and Herman Miller textile designer Alexander Girard about the lack of high-quality outdoor furniture available on the market inspired this design
- Eames produced the first chairs as a special project for the Irwin Miller house in Columbus, Indiana, which Girard and architect Eero Saarinen designed
- Originally, Herman Miller marketed these chairs for use in outdoor or indoor residential and corporate environments, although they are not currently recommended for outdoor use
- Structurally the soft pad chair is the same as the aluminum group chair, with the added feature of upholstered cushions
Product Features/Benefits
- The chair's unique suspension consists of a continuous piece of seat-back upholstery stretched tautly between aluminum side ribs, creating a firm and flexible sitting pocket that subtly conforms to the body's shape
- Two-inch-thick foam cushions provide added comfort
- With one-piece, curved aluminum side ribs and an aluminum base, the chair is strong, yet lightweight and easy to move
- The chair features a 5-star base tilt/swivel or swivel base and the ottoman features a 4-star base
- Chairs include casters or adjustable glides; the ottoman has adjustable glides
