Design History/Concept

• Nelson originally designed the bench as a way of deterring callers from sitting in his office for more than fifteen minutes; it failed the test, but became a durable icon
  
• He later designed his Basic Cabinet Series that used the bench as the base on which other products were stacked
  
• D.J. De Pree, Herman Miller's founder, learned of his work through a Life magazine article on Nelson's Storagewall
  
• It was originally called the slat bench
