Na3Po4, also called trisodium phosphate, is a kind of sodium phosphate that refers to a variety of salts of sodium (Na+) and phosphate (PO43-) and has various applications, from serving as a buffering agent in foods to being a vital part of some industrial processes, and plays a role in biological systems.

Features of Na3Po4

Na3Po4 is easily deliqued and weathered in dry air to produce sodium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium bicarbonate. In water, it nearly completely decomposes into disodium hydrogen phosphate and sodium hydroxide. Alkaline detergents are used in the electroplating industry to prepare surface treatment, degreasing fluids, and unpolished parts. In the synthetic detergent formula, due to the large alkaline, it is only used for strong alkaline cleaning agent formulas, such as car cleaning agents, floor cleaning agents, metal cleaning agents, etc. Its density is 2.53 g/cm3, the melting point is 73.3-76.7 ℃, and the boiling point is 158 ℃. It’s a white crystalline powder and is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol.

The usage of Na3Po4

The trisodium phosphate’s formula is Na3Po4, which means it belongs to the sodium phosphate family, in which the other two members are monosodium phosphate and disodium phosphate. It may also be applied in similar areas as sodium phosphate. The trisodium phosphate’s uses are quite wide, and the main application fields are listed as follows.

In the field of healthcare and medicine, Na3Po4 can be used for short-term, local treatment of inflammation with neomycin as bacterial prophylaxis, used after glaucoma surgery or after cataract surgery. It can also be a mild laxative, stimulates the emptying of the gall bladder, is a palatable of saline laxatives, and an anti-hypercalcemia oral solution. Besides, it can play a role in controlling the pH of water hardness precipitation and control agents in mildly acidic solutions. The extremely low phosphate content can have adverse effects on breathing, agitation, alteration of the state of mind, muscular weakness, or muscle damage, known as rhabdomyolysis. The trisodium phosphate in food can be added as an additive to form an emulsifier that enables the uniform distribution of two or more components, which is otherwise impossible. The prevention of oil separation from the remainder of the mixture is an essential specific purpose of emulsifiers. In the case of processed cheeses, meat products, and soups, trisodium phosphate is used as an emulsifier. Moreover, there is trisodium phosphate cleaner since Na3Po4 is a cleaning agent, stain remover, and degreaser commonly used in household cleaners. The salt is also an ingredient in various industrial solvents.
