About products and suppliers

Electrical installations require the coordination of innumerable cables, switches, connectors, and many other components. However, these components have to be carefully isolated from one another and protected against the elements to avoid accidents. This is where a waterproof electrical box can be invaluable, housing and organizing different electrical elements in the same enclosed space.

Metal vs. Plastic junction boxes

When it comes to a waterproof junction box system, be it for residential, commercial, or industrial applications, each material will have its advantages and disadvantages. However, whatever the material is, every indoor or outdoor electrical junction box has to have certain water, dust, and fireproof properties to withstand some damage without collapsing the whole electrical grid. It’s also important for them to be installed properly on a solid surface and preferably recessed behind drywall in residential installations. This will ensure only qualified personnel can have access to the weatherproof electrical junction box, rather than it being exposed to whoever happens upon it.

That said, a plastic weatherproof electrical box will generally have the advantage of being lighter and cheaper than its metal counterpart. Polymers such as PVC and nylon are used to create a uniform watertight junction box that can be more easily customized or adapted on the spot if need be. A metal outdoor junction box, on the other hand, will be stronger, and thus more resistant to the weather and direct physical impacts. In addition, these metal junction boxes are recommended when using metal-sheathed wires, since the box can act as their grounding.

What do NEMA, IP, and UL ratings mean for junction boxes?

Outdoor waterproof electrical boxes have to follow certain safety and manufacturing guidelines. NEMA, IP, and UL are standards that rate a product's adherence to these guidelines and overall strength against external forces.

In the U.S., NEMA refers to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, which uses a tiered rating system to classify each enclosure, be it for its anti-corrosion properties or structural rigidity under extreme stress. IP stands for Ingress Protection and is accompanied by two numbers, such as the IP68 junction box. The first digit indicates the enclosure’s protection against dust and debris, while the second rates its watertightness. UL is another quality control rating issued by UL Solutions, a world-renowned organization in the sector, and considers the enclosure’s flame resistance, strength, and many other aspects.
