When sourcing 3-side seal pouches, prioritize material safety, barrier properties, and dimensional accuracy.

1. Material Composition & Food Contact Safety:

Verify Certifications: Demand proof of FDA, EU, or relevant national food-grade certifications (e.g., SGS, ISO 22000) for all layers, especially if the pouches will contact food or pharmaceuticals.
Layer Structure Disclosure: Request a precise breakdown of the laminated layers (e.g., PET/AL/PE, OPP/CPP). Understand the purpose of each layer (e.g., PET for printability/strength, AL for barrier, PE for heat-sealing).
BPA/Phthalate-Free: Explicitly confirm pouches are free from BPA and phthalates, particularly for sensitive applications.

2. Barrier Properties:

Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) & Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR): Specify required OTR and WVTR values, especially for oxygen-sensitive or moisture-sensitive products. Request test reports.
UV Protection: If contents are light-sensitive, inquire about UV-blocking additives or opaque layers (e.g., aluminum foil, metallized film).

3. Dimensional Accuracy & Sealing Integrity:

Precise Specifications: Provide exact width, length, and gusset dimensions (if applicable). Clarify tolerance levels.
Seal Strength: Inquire about seal strength (e.g., N/15mm) and request samples for independent seal integrity testing (e.g., burst test, leak test) using your own filling and sealing equipment.
Heat Seal Temperature Range: Understand the recommended heat seal temperature window for the pouch material to ensure compatibility with your machinery and prevent damage or poor seals.

4. Printing & Aesthetics:

Color Matching: Provide Pantone (PMS) or CMYK specifications. Request physical samples or high-resolution proofs for color verification. Be aware of potential color shifts between digital proofs and final print on flexible films.
Registration Accuracy: For multi-color prints, verify print registration quality to avoid blurred or misaligned designs.
Surface Finish: Specify matte, glossy, or custom finishes, and ensure consistency across batches.

5. Supplier Vetting & Quality Control:

Factory Audit: Consider a third-party factory audit for larger orders to verify production capabilities and QC processes.
Sample Evaluation: Always obtain pre-production samples for physical inspection, material testing, and compatibility trials with your product and machinery before committing to a bulk order.
Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ): Negotiate MOQs, understanding they often correlate with per-unit cost.
Packaging & Shipping: Specify packaging requirements (e.g., cartons, pallets, moisture protection) to prevent damage during transit.
