When sourcing open-head drums, prioritize material compatibility, UN certification, and seller verification.

Identify Contents: Precisely determine the chemical, food, or waste material to be stored.
Drum Material: Select drums made from appropriate materials (e.g., carbon steel for most non-corrosive liquids, stainless steel for corrosive chemicals or food-grade applications, HDPE for water-based or certain aggressive chemicals). Verify liner suitability if applicable (e.g., epoxy-phenolic, rust inhibitor).
Gasket Material: Ensure lid gaskets (e.g., EPDM, nitrile, Viton) are compatible with drum contents to prevent leaks and degradation.

Hazardous Materials: For hazardous or regulated substances, demand UN-certified drums. Verify the UN mark on product descriptions and ask for corresponding certification documents (e.g., UN 1A2 for steel drums, UN 1H2 for plastic drums).
UN Mark Breakdown: Understand the UN mark (e.g., "UN 1A2/X120/S/YY/USA/+AA000") signifies drum type, packing group suitability (X for I, II, III; Y for II, III; Z for III), maximum gross mass, solid/liquid indicator, year of manufacture, country, and manufacturer code.
Testing Documentation: Request test reports for pressure, drop, and stacking tests relevant to the UN certification.
Food Grade: For food contact, inquire about FDA compliance or equivalent certifications.

Closure Type: Evaluate closure mechanisms (bolt ring, lever lock ring). Bolt ring closures offer superior security and sealing integrity, essential for hazardous materials or frequent transport. Lever lock rings are quicker for less critical applications.
Gauge Thickness: For steel drums, specify appropriate gauge thickness (e.g., 18 gauge, 20 gauge) based on content weight, handling frequency, and stacking requirements to prevent denting and compromise.
Interior Coating: For specific applications, consider interior coatings (e.g., rust inhibitors, chemical-resistant liners) to extend drum life and prevent contamination.
Handling Features: Consider drums with integrated handling features like rolling hoops or chimes for easier manipulation and stacking.
