Carboxymethyl Cellulose is the refined cotton to react with sodium hydroxide to produce the alkali cellulose, and then carboxymethylated by chloroacetic acid to get  an ionic water-soluble polymer powder, an anionic cellulose ether.

Product Properties of CMC

1. CMC is soluble in both cold and hot water, not soluble in ethanol, ethyl ether, isopropyl alcohol, acetone and other organic solvents. It's stable in alkaline solution, easily decomposable when exposed to acids. Precipitate appeared when PH value is 2-3 and exposed to polyvalent metal salt. The PH of 1% aqueous solution is 6.5-8.5.When the PH >10 or <5, the viscosity reduce significantly, the  performance is the best when PH = 7.

2. CMC is stable to a certain extent to optothermal. The viscosity of aqueous solution decreased with the increase of temperature, it shoots up below 20 °C,  the change is slow when 45 °C, above 80 °C and long time to heat can make its colloid denaturation and the  apparent decline in viscosity and performance.

3. The leading indicator to measure the quality of CMC is the degree of substitution and purity. Generally, CMC properties of different substitution degree is different; Degree of substitution increases, the solubility increases, the transparency and stability of the solution also is better. Reportedly, the  transparency is better when CMC substitution degree during 0.7-1.2, and the viscosity is the highest when  PH value is 6-9. (For quality assurance, in addition to choose etherifying agent, also have to consider the factors influencing the degree of substitution and purity, such as the dosge of alkali and etherifying agent, etherification time and system, water content, temperature, PH value, solution concentration, salt, and so on.)



Main Uses and Applications of CMC


The largest use of CMC is to compound soap and synthetic detergent, add about 1% of CMC in the heavy cleaner, to prevent the dirt washed out reprecipitating on the fabric. Secondly, CMC is used as suspension stabilizer of drilling fluid in petroleum industry.

1. In the detergent, CMC is used as dirt redeposition resistance agent, especially for hydrophobic synthetic fabrics, the dirt redeposition resistance effect is great.

2. Used in oil and gas drilling, sink well and other projects, in oil drilling, CMC can be used as suspension stabilizer and water-retaining agent to protect oil well. Generally, the dosage is 2.3 t for shallow well, 5.6 t for deep well.

3. In textile industry, CMC is used as thickening agent of sizing agent and dyeing agent, to improve the solubility and viscosity of sizing agent, is easy for the textile printing and hard finishing.

4. Used as anti-settling agent, emulsifier, dispersant, flatting agent, adhesive of paint, can make the paint solids evenly distributed in solvents, not to delaminate for a long-term, also widely used in the oil paint.

5. Used as flocculant to remove the calcium ion  is more effective than sodium gluconate, when used as cation exchange, the exchange capacity can reach 1.6 ml/g.

6. In papermaking industry used as paper sizing agent, can obviously improve the dry strength, wet strength and oil resistance, ink absorbency and water resistanceof paper.

7. Used as hydrosol in cosmetics and thickener in the toothpaste, the dosage is about 5%.

8.  CMC is of  thickening, emulsification, excipient, preservation and other functions.Can be used in drinks, biscuits, puffed food, ice cream, cakes, jellies and other foods instead of gelatin, agar, sodium alginate, xanthan gum, used in moderation for production need.

9. In the pharmaceutical industry can be used as emulsifying stabilizer of injection, as binder and filmogen of tablet. Someone through the basis and animal experiments proved that CMC is safe and reliable anticancer drug carrier.

10. CMC also can be used as flocculating agent, chelating agent, emulsifier, thickener, water-retaining agent, sizing agent, film-forming materials, widely used in electronics, pesticide, leather, plastic, printing, ceramics, daily chemical and other fields.

About storage and transportation

This product should be stored to avoid moisture, fire, high temperature, and stored in ventilative and dry place. It is forbidden to contact with water, otherwise, it will gel or partly dissolved to cause it cannot be used Avoid rain during transportation, and strictly prohibit to use cleek when loading. This product stored for long-term storage with push, may  cause it hard to use but not affect the quality.

About the usage

Mix CMC directly with water, make into paste glue soluting, standby. When in preparation of CMC paste glue, firstly add a certain amount of clean water in the pill tank with dasher. Then scatter CMC slowly and evenly in the pill tank with the dasher is open, and stir constantly to make CMC and water completely fuse and CMC can be fully dissolved .When dissolving CMC, the reason to scatter CMC evenly and stir constantly is to prevent CMC with water cloting and caking to reduce the dissolution of CMC, and improve the solution rate of CMC. The mixing time and CMC completely dissolved time are not consistent, are two concepts. Generally speaking, the mixing time is  much shorter than the time of CMC completely dissolved , the time needed for both depending on the specific time.

The basis to confirm the mixing time is: when CMC is evenly dispersed in water, without crumby objects existing, can stop stirring, make CMC and water interpenetrative and integrated in the standing state.

To confirm CMC is fully dissolved based on such several aspects: (1) CMC bond with water completely, not existing solid-liquid separation phenomenon; (2) The mixed paste glue is nearly colorless and transparent, without granular objects. From CMC is mixed into pill tank with water, to CMC completely dissolved, the required time is about 10-20 hours.

 About the preparation  

1. The compatibility of CMC with strong acid, strong alkali and heavy metal ions (such as aluminum, zinc, mercury, silver, iron, etc.) is taboo.

2. The acceptable daily intake of CMC is 0- 25 mg/kg/d.

3. When PH < 2, or mixed with 95% ethanol, the CMC solution will produce precipitate.

4. CMC with gelatin and pectin can form condensation products, also can form compound with collagen, can precipitate some positively charged proteins.
