Electric winches
Bolted to an off-road 4x4 vehicle, electric winches derive power from the vehicle's battery through a process called cable and remote control. Electric winches differ in pull or hoist capacity, usually between 4,500 and 15,000 and sometimes more. A basic electric winch consists of a steel or synthetic rope, often lighter and easier to handle, and a motor enclosed in a solenoid box, also called a power pack. The solenoid box contains the winch wire or wireless control for the winch. An electric winch can be used sporadically. However, heavy-duty models with greater electric motors can be used for large and continuous pulls or hoists. A small-capacity electric winch can be mounted on light vehicles, such as 4x4 SUVs and recreational off-road vehicles. Higher-capacity electric winches can also be mounted on large 4x4 off-road vehicles, boats, and trailers, which don't need frequent electrical access. Battery-powered and cordless electric winches are available for less frequent work.
Hydraulic winches
An off-road 4x4 vehicle can be a powerful hydraulic winch, using the vehicle's power steering pump to operate the winch. A hydraulic winch has greater and more extended pull or hoist capacity. It is ideal for intense but continuous pulling of heavy loads, such as boulders, logs, and boats. The vehicle's steering and other functions must not be disrupted when mounting a hydraulic winch on an off-road 4x4. Though often more rugged than electric winches, hydraulic winches are more complex, costly, and difficult to install. However, they provide higher capacity for professional and industrial applications.
There are two main types of winch rope: steel cable and synthetic rope. Each type possesses unique features that are suitable for various 4x4 off-road experiences.
Steel cables
A steel cable winch is constructed with high strength and is suitable for relatively low cost. Wired steel winches are very much like those used on construction and industrial machines. Known steel cables provide some abrasion resistance and are therefore rugged for tough terrains. Also, they are not easily damaged by sunlight, so they can be left on the roof of the vehicle for off-road trips. However, a steel cable is heavier than a synthetic rope, and so, the winch requires more power for operation. The winch holds a steel cable with a drum made of heavy cast iron or steel, typically the most rugged and easiest to manufacture, regardless of where the material is obtained.
Synthetic ropes
Synthetic winch ropes are derived from special high-strength plastic fibers, such as ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (HMPE), nylon, or a blend of both. Synthetic winch ropes are lighter, easier to handle, and safer than steel cables if they snap. A synthetic rope will be non-conductive, which means it will not damage or help. These features make it an optional type of cable for off-road 4x4 vehicles. However, synthetic ropes are not very resistant to abrasion and can be damaged by sunlight, though some have UV protectants. A winch holds a synthetic rope with a drum made of aluminum, typically a low-density but solid metal. The aluminum for the winch drum is often derived from recycled post-consumer and post-industrial products.
Hybrid ropes
Hybrid winch ropes combine the two types of materials above. Common combinations include a nylon core with an HMPE cover or vice versa. Hybrid winch ropes are constructed to maximize the advantages of each type. For example, a hybrid rope may include a nylon core so that it does not easily stretch and easily absorbs shock, minimizing slippage and snap-back. At the same time, the outer layer of HMPE fibers would provide maximum abrasion resistance. Hybrid winch ropes are ideal for rough and unpredictable 4x4 off-road terrains. There are concerns regarding winch drums and hybrid ropes. As with the synthetic rope, hybrid winch ropes are not as easily damaged by sunlight as the synthetic rope. But again, as with the synthetic portion, they are not as easy to deal with. Many are also more costly.
One of the mountaineering 4x4 winches is an electric winch with a small capacity (5,000 lbs or less). It can be fixed on a 4x4 SUV for light off-road use, where the electric motor can intermittently run for short periods. A wireless remote control is housed in the solenoid box powered by the vehicle battery. This winch is ideal for pulling the truck free from sand, mud, or light rocks.
Industrial mining and construction companies use higher capacity electric winches, which can be mounted on larger vehicles or boats, as are often the case. These areas allow the electric motor to run longer and under heavier loads. A wired remote control is housed in a rugged solenoid box that is enclosed, as is the battery pack.
A 4x4 hydraulic winch (8,000 lbs to 15,000 lbs) is ideal for heavy and extreme off-roading. This winch utilizes the vehicle's power steering pump to provide steady power for long periods. It is a great option for pulling large boulders, fallen trees, or other vehicles. This hydraulic winch is also mounted on larger and commercial 4x4 trucks.
Farming and marine users opt for hydraulic winches with very high capacities (15,000 lbs +). These winches draw their power from tractor or boat engines. They are best for industrial and commercial uses, such as pulling in fishing nets, large boat mooring lines, and heavy anchor chains. These winches are also ideal for hauling heavy structures like docks, barges, and wharves.
Occasionally, a small capacity electric winch can be fixed on light 4x4 vehicles like spares. It is often used by field workers in remote areas to pull or hoist lighter materials. Battery-powered models may pull or hoist lighter materials and are often stored in emergency kits.
There are some important factors that one should consider when selecting a suitable 4x4 winch.
Pulling capacity
A key factor in winch selection is the motor's pulling capacity (the weight it can safely pull). Ideally, the capacity should be at least 1.5 times the vehicle's weight. For instance, a vehicle that weighs 4,000 lbs should have a winch that can pull at least 6,000 lbs.) Off-road experts advise not to go lower than what is recommended but not higher, if it can be helped, as this can lead to problems down the road. The electric motor has to work harder and longer, and this strains it when the load is heavier than the winch. Durability
Mountain winches need to resist dirt, water, and other debris since they use the vehicle in rough outdoors. Electric winches are more ruggedly designed to resist dust and water. Look for one rated IP67 or better. This means it can withstand water and dust entry for at least 30 minutes. Steel wires are more durable but do not degrade with UV light. Proper aluminum or synthetic rope winch cable is often rated for UV rays.
Other features
Wireless remote controls are more convenient but sometimes make them tough to operate. It's also important to consider what other optional features or extras the package contains. For example, some winches contain university or extreme duty fasteners, while others contain a brake on the load line. High-density winch hawse fairleads made from aluminum or steel are other important features.
